Microplastics: Waking up to the Plasticene

Plastic, Plastic Everywhere
Every breath we take, every bite of food we eat, every sip of water we drink carries with it invisible stowaways: microplastics. These tiny particles, born from the conveniences of modern life, have quietly infiltrated our bloodstreams, lungs, and even placentas. We are living in what scientists now call the Plasticene Era—a time when our own inventions are reshaping both our environment and our biology.
I am thrilled to share a new white paper, “Microplastics: Waking up to the Plasticene” written in collaboration with Private Medical, Dr. Kari C Nadeau, Chair, Department of Environmental Health, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and Dr. Parneet Pal, Founder, Systematically Well Advisory, that takes a clear-eyed look at this unfolding crisis. Together, we examine four crucial dimensions:
Pathways of Exposure – how plastics enter our bodies through food, air, water, and even medical therapies.
Health Consequences – what science tells us (and what it doesn’t yet) about inflammation, immune disruption, and systemic risks.
Practical Strategies – evidence-based steps that individuals, families, and communities can take now to reduce exposure—without upending daily life.
The Road Ahead – the urgent need for research, policy, and systemic change if we are to bend the curve of this planetary health threat.
What excites me most is how this fits into the broader longevity narrative. Living longer, healthier lives means not only optimizing nutrition, exercise, and sleep but also confronting the silent exposures that shape our cellular destiny. Microplastics are part of that equation—and ignoring them is no longer an option.
In fact, Dr. Kari C Nadeau will be speaking on this topic as part of the Faculty at DOC summit 2025. This year’s theme is The Science of Longevity: Clinical Breakthroughs, AI and Women’s Health.

When I lecture on this subject, I’ve been struck by the surge of interest—we are approaching a zeitgeist moment. People are ready to learn, act, and demand better from the systems around them. Companies are beginning to realize they can no longer hide from their microplastic pollution.
The scientific community is studying it's effects on our biology with accelerating interest.
So I invite you: read the paper, make one or two changes in your own daily life, and share it with others. Small shifts, multiplied across millions of households, can create real impact.
